A football fan who had swallowed 10 pints of lager was so offended by seeing a security camera in a Carlisle pub toilet that he ripped it out.

Shane Lee Hope, 25, was later identified as the guilty person because the £2,000 CCTV camera that was wrecked recorded the entire incident.

At Carlisle Magistrates' court, Hope, of Riverside, Dalston, admitted causing criminal damage.

The court heard he had been out drinking with pals since 2pm and stayed in the pub to watch a football match on its TV.

At around 7pm he was in the Bronx Bar in Botchergate when he decided to go to the toilet.

The camera inside the toilet recorded him reaching up as he was about to pull it from the wall.

"Other CCTV footage shows him leaving the toilet and placing the camera down the rear of his trousers," said Pam Ward, prosecuting.

"The camera then falls out if his trousers and he puts it back down the front if his pants. The footage shows him showing the CCTV to friends and then putting it down the side of where he was sitting."

Sara Budniak, for Hope, said he wanted to apologise for his actions.

"He wants to explain that this was an extremely stupid mistake," said the lawyer.

"It was due to the alcohol and him thinking it was inappropriate for there to be a CCTV camera inside toilets.

"He'd had about ten pints of lager - the drinks just kept coming."

Magistrates imposed a six week 6pm to 6am curfew, £85 costs, and ordered the defendant to pay compensation of £2,215 to cover the cost if the wrecked camera.

The defendant will complete his curfew at his partner's address in Mayfield Avenue, Harraby, Carlisle.
