A farm worker was twice caught with a folding pocket knife.
Liam Carruthers, 21, of Askham, gave an indicated plea of guilty to one charge of possessing a bladed article which had a blade longer than three inches.
Magistrates in Carlisle heard how it was the second time in two days that Carruthers had been seen with a knife on education premises - one one occasion "showing it with a cut throat action".
However, he had no previous convictions and indeed used the knife on the farm.
The incidents, at Newton Rigg College and on a mini bus from Newton Rigg to Muncaster, were an "error of judgement" magistrates heard.
Carruthers was given a 12 week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.
He must also pay £85 costs and £115 victim surcharge.
