A man has suffered potentially "life-changing" injuries following an assault in Whitehaven.

The 39-year-old was one of two victims who were injured in the attack, which happened in Lowther Street late last night.

Police have arrested one man in connection with the incident.

He is currently helping with enquiries.

The victims are both men from the Whitehaven area.

A police spokesman said: "One of them sustained a serious injury - life-changing - and was taken to hospital."

He suffered serious but non life-threatening head injuries.

The other victim was a 26-year-old man.

Police said he tried to intervene but was also assaulted, sustaining minor injuries.

Police were called to the scene at 11.42pm.

A 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of GBH and ABH, and is currently in police custody.

Officers have today been carrying out detailed investigations at the scene of the incident.

Several police vehicles, including a Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) van, have been seen parked in or around the Lowther Street area.

The spokesman said investigations were continuing.
