A man who attacked his partner, leaving her battered and bruised, has given a 16-month prison sentence.

Luke Cockburn assaulted his now ex-girlfriend Stacey Adams twice in two days at Brampton, near Carlisle, during December last year.

The 25-year-old kicked Miss Adams to the ribs and broke her nose on the first occasion.

The following day he punched her injured face again. Carlisle Crown Court heard that Miss Adams was left with bruises all over her body.

She was too scared to report the attacks to police, prompting Cockburn's sister to report what he had done.

Cockburn pleaded guilty to two counts of assaulting Miss Adams, causing her actual bodily harm.

He was sentenced today by Judge Peter Davies, who said prison was the only option for what were serious offences.

Cockburn, previously of Carlisle Road, Brampton, was made subject to a restraining order which prevents him from contacting his victim indefinitely.
