A man has died following a crash on the M6 in Cumbria.

It happened at about 11.50pm last night near Carlisle.

Police have now confirmed that a man in his 60s has died.

A section the northbound carriageway remained closed this morning while accident investigations were carried out.

It has now reopened.

The collision involved one vehicle, a grey Range Rover, on the M6 nortbound at Southwaite.

The driver, from outside the county, was the only occupant of the vehicle. The family of the man have been informed.

The northbound carriageway was shut between junction 41 at Catterlen and junction 42, Carlisle south, for several hours.

This was while detailed investigations and barrier repairs were carried out.

The road reopened at about 8.30am.

Vehicles were being diverted on the A6, resulting in heavy traffic between Plumpton and Low Hesket.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident, or anybody with any information that could assist, to contact PC 2367 Baker of the Mobile Support Group on 101, quoting log 0247 of September 13.
