A man accused of possessing hundreds of illegal child porn images believes he has been "set up", jurors were told.

Arron Ryan Wright, 26, is on trial at Carlisle Crown Court accused of two charges of possessing prohibited images of children on a computer and mobile phone during 2015.

He denies both allegations.

Opening the case today, prosecutor Richard Archer said a friend of Wright's visited his home in August, 2015.

After watching a film on his computer in the dining room, Wright went to bed. The friend stayed up, browsing the computer and found a file named "comics".

"She and Mr Wright both have an interest in comic art," said Mr Archer.

But the prosecutor told jurors: "She was horrified to discover that what was contained within that file included pornographic images of children engaged in sexual activity with adults."

These were said to be "cartoons or drawings".

Police discovered 1,067 prohibited pictures on his computer and 459 banned images on a mobile phone.

At least 175 of those phone images were "thumbnail duplicates" which may have been created through an automatic back-up.

Wright, of Close Street, Carlisle, denied any knowledge of illegal images.

He told police of "many visitors" and "lots of parties" and claimed the whole household had access to his phone and he told "everyone" his passwords.

"He believed he had been set up," stated Mr Archer.

The trial continues.
