A man facing historic child rape allegations will go on trial before a jury later this year.

Richard John Winn, 56, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court today and faced 11 charges.

During a short hearing before Judge James Adkin, Winn pleaded not guilty to five charges, each of which alleges the rape of a girl who is said to have been aged under 16 at the time.

Winn also denied a further six charges. These allege both the sexual assault and indecent assault of a different girl, who is also said to have been aged under 16.

The 11 charges cover a five-year period.

Winn's trial is estimated to last around four days. The hearing is due to start at the crown court on July 9.

In the meantime Winn, of Derwent Avenue, Maryport, was granted conditional bail by Judge Adkin.
