A man was warned he could be jailed for wounding and threatening to kill a pensioner in Carlisle.

Stephen Taylor, 53, faced three charges when he appeared over a video link at the city's crown court.

Taylor pleaded guilty to wounding Thomas Reay with intent to do him grievous bodily harm; and making a threat to kill him - intending that his victim would believe the threat would be carried out.

He also admitted damaging property, a window, belonging to Mr Reay, who is said to be aged in his mid-seventies.

All of the offences are said to have taken place at Pennine Way, in Harraby, on July 14, although no exact details of what happened were given during the short court hearing.

Taylor, of Pennine Way, was represented by Brendan Burke, who said "powerful psychiatric mitigation" would be given on the defendant's behalf in the hope that an immediate jail term could be suspended.

Judge Tony Lancaster adjourned the case for background reports.

Taylor will be sentenced on October 27, and in the meantime was remanded in custody.

However, Judge Lancaster said: "The fact that I am adjourning for a pre-sentence report doesn't mean that the court will agree with your submission that any sentence ought to be suspended."
