A man has admitted committing a second knifepoint Carlisle robbery in less than two years.

Wesley Jeffrey Barnett, 22, faced two charges when he appeared at the city's crown court today.

Barnett pleaded guilty to robbing Paul Leach of lager and cigarettes, and to threatening him in public with a kitchen knife.

It follows an incident which occurred at Carlisle's Beverley Rise, Harraby, at about 1.30am on August 18. Mr Leach was unhurt.

Barnett committed the crime just weeks after being released from prison midway through a 40-month term. This was imposed for the early morning knifepoint robbery, in September 2015, of a Carlisle newsagent who was left "petrified" by that crime.

No details of Barnett's most recent offence were given during a short hearing in front of Judge Barbara Forrester. She adjourned the case, and asked for a full pre-sentence report to be prepared.

Barnett, of Lime Walk, Denton Holme, Carlisle, will receive his punishment at the crown court on October 20.

In the meantime he was remanded in custody by the judge.
