A west Cumbrian man has been spared prison after he pleaded guilty to a charge of racially aggravated assault and two charges of using threatening words or behaviour.

John Paul Williamson, 32, of South Row, Whitehaven, was sentenced to 60 days, suspended for 24 months after he admitted assaulting Mehmet Tutan in the town on November 13 last year.

He also admitted using threatening, abusive or insulting words to Serdar Simsek on the same day and was sentenced to 30 days, suspended for 24 months to serve concurrently.

He was also sentenced to 30 days, suspended for 24 months for using threatening, abusive or insulting words to Ferhat Tutan on November 13. That sentence would be served consecutively.

Williamson was also ordered to pay £165 costs.
