A man has denied the alleged illegal possession of a hammer in a Cumbrian town.

Shane Rumney, 25, will go on trial at Carlisle Crown Court later this year.

This follows his plea of not guilty to a charge which alleges he was in possession of an offensive weapon without lawful authority or reasonable excuse. It is said this occurred in a public place at Silloth on May 8.

During a short court hearing in front of Judge Barbara Forrester, Rumney was told his trial is due to take place in the week of September 11.

It is expected this will last around a day-and-a-half.

In the meantime, Rumney, of Eden Street, Silloth, was granted conditional bail by Judge Forrester.
