A mountain biker fell 30ft on cliffs in west Cumbria, sparking a major rescue operation.

The alarm was raised at 7.16pm last night.

A male mountain biker had suffered injuries after falling somewhere between St Bees and Fleswick, a popular cliffside route.

Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team were initially called out.

A spokesman said: "Due to the potential access and extrication issues available in that area for a 30ft fall, we immediately requested support from Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 999, along with our flank team of Maryport Coastguard."

The person who reported the incident was not from the local area and could not describe exactly where the injured man was.

They worked alongside the rescue team, accompanying the crew to the scene.

St Bees RNLI were also out on training in the area and diverted to provide assistance and help locate the injured man.

Once located, St Bees crew members were sent ashore to assess the man's injuries and wait for further assistance.

The Whitehaven crew then brough North West Ambulance Service paramedics and police to the scene.

The North West Air Ambulance was also on scene.

The casualty was finally transferred to hospital via road.

The rescue operation concluded at 10.30pm.
