A stretch of the M6 at Carlisle will be closed off completely tonight as a major resurfacing project continues.

Highways England have spent the last few weeks working on the motorway between junctions 44, for Carlisle north, and 45 for Gretna.

The work has been happening on the northbound carriageway with a 50mph speed limit in place during the way. One lane has also been closed.

At night the carriageway has been reduced to a single lane between 8pm and 6am with the entire stretch of road closed off on Saturday nights.

It will be shut off tonight.

A Highways England spokesman said: "The final Saturday night closure is scheduled for February 24.

"A clearly-signed diversion will be in place."
