Flaming beacons were lit across Cumbria to mark the Queen's 90th birthday.

People gathered last night at landmarks across the county to celebrate the monarch's milestone birthday.

Among them was a beacon on Victoria Lawn in Bitts Park, which was set alight by the city's mayor Steven Layden.

The other was in front of Carlisle Castle and was featured on the popular BBC programme The One Show.

Mr Layden said: "Can I just say what a pleasure it is to be here representing the people of Carlisle on this special occasion as the leading citizen of Carlisle for the next four and a half weeks (when his time as mayor ends).

"I think, whatever people think about the Royal Family, The Queen commands respect."

The Rev Keith Teasdale, from St Cuthbert's Church in the city centre, said a prayer to thank God for The Queen and blessed the beacon before it was lit up. He also led the crowd as they sang the national anthem.

Among them was Martin Race, of Morton, who turned out with his wife Gillian and sons Timothy, 12, and Joseph, nine, to watch the beacon being lit.

He said: "We love the Royal Family and I thought 'let's go and see what they have done'."

Timothy added: "I like that we have got a beacon because we are not a massive city."

Beacons were also lit on top of Scafell and towns and villages including Hayton and Brampton.
