Lifeboat volunteers rushed to the aid of a fishing boat after it had ran out of fuel while at sea.

St Bees RNLI crew members were called to help a small boat adrift near Salcome Bay, to the south of Whitehaven, on Sunday at 3.50pm.

They made their way around St Bees Head and located the vessel. One of the volunteers went on board to refuel and restart the boat.

The lifeboat crew then escorted it back to where it had begun its journey.

St Bees Lifeboat operations manager Dick Beddows said: "We are glad everyone got home safely.

"On this occasion the sea was calm but the weather can change very quickly.

"If you do go out in a small fishing boat or pleasure craft, please make sure you have enough fuel for the trip, a means of communication, preferably a VHF radio, and always wear a lifejacket."
