Carlisle's housing boom in the north of the city could be set for another boost - with more than 230 homes planned for the site of a former army barracks.

City-based North Associates has put forward proposals for a mix of two, three, four and five-bedroom homes on the Hadrian's Camp site at Houghton.

Documents show the site is south-west of the existing Eden Gate development, currently being constructed by Story Homes.

Hadrian's Camp was opened on July 1, 1939 and was one of many in Carlisle to be developed for the outbreak of World War Two.

It eventually closed in 1968, with the majority of the site cleared in the 1970s.

The plans are the latest addition to a raft of developments planned for Carlisle's outskirts.

Earlier this week the city council talked about how it wanted to create a so-called Garden City with 10,000 new homes, schools, businesses and roads in the Carleton, Durdar and Cummersdale areas.

A statement on the Hadrian's Camp development says: "The site is currently accessed at two points: one off Houghton Road and the second off Centurions Walk.

"Story Homes is currently developing the site to the north-west boundary.

"This site will provide access to the application site."

City councillor James Bainbridge, whose Stanwix Rural ward encompasses the development, said he is continuing to look at the plans.

He said: "The school has been expanded from the Story end, but 200 extra houses could be a problem.

"I'm not sure how the county council can squeeze a pint in a half-pint glass, so to speak."

Mr Bainbridge added he is happy to speak to residents who may have concerns about the development.

"The best way for them to make their feelings known is to comment on the application," he said.

A spokeswoman for North Associates said that there was no developer in place at the current time.

One would be sought following the granting of outline planning permission and a public consultation could take place at that stage.

She added: "The provision of affordable housing will be discussed with Carlisle City Council as part and parcel of the consideration of the planning application.

"However, this will need to be seen in the context of the extent of any other planning contributions that may be requested, for example education."
