An elderly man needed hospital treatment after a late night fire forced him to flee from terraced home in Carlisle.

It happened in Orfeur Street just after 11pm last night.

A spokesman for the Carlisle East fire station said that when the two fire crews arrived – one from the east of the city and the other from the west – the man had got out of the property, which was heavily smoke logged.

The 73-year-old man had managed to put out the fire – caused by an overheated chip pan – by dousing the flames with a wet tea towel. He was taken to The Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle and treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire crews used a powerful fan to ventilate the property.
