A pub that was built in the iconic style of Harry Redfern is up for sale for £225,000.

The Black Lion at Durdar, which is situated at a country crossroads, is popular with locals and racegoers.

The sale is being handled by commercial estate agents Peill & Co.

A spokesman for the firm described the pub as a “detached food-led free house” on a substantial site with future potential development, subject to planning permission.

The spokesman added: “The property sits on a generous regularly shaped level site, and occupies a prominent location at the Durdar crossroads, highly visible to passing traffic.”

The pub, which is near Carlisle Racecourse, is two-storey and consists of two main trading areas, each with 40 covers and served by separate fully fitted bar areas.

The spokesman said: “There are a number of character features to the outlet including exposed beams and an open fire place.

“The main entrance into the pub is from the back, which links into a large surfaced car park.

“The ancillary accommodation on the ground floor includes a fully fitted kitchen, side cellar/storeroom, boiler house and toilets facilities.

“The upper floor comprises of three bed living accommodation with separate lounge, kitchen and bathroom.

“The Black Lion is the only pub within the village.”

The pub opened on May 6, 1929 and was extended in December 1969.

Henry Long was the first manager and when he died in 1946, the pub passed to his wife who resigned in December 1947.

The pub remains open for business but the landlady declined to comment when contacted by the News & Star.
