Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is in Carlisle.

The politician has come to the city to meet the city council's Neighbourhood Services team who helped clear snow during the recent bad weather brought by the Beast from the East.

He was first seen outside the Crown and Mitre Hotel in the city centre and was joined by leader of Carlisle City Council Colin Glover and Labour's prospective parliamentary candidate Ruth Alcroft.

Mr Corbyn says Carlisle's response - where the in house team who were unable to complete their usual duties stepped up to clear the streets of snow and keep the city moving - is proof of the critical need to protect public services.

He congratulated council workers who worked during severe snow storms struck a fortnight ago.

Mr Corbyn added: "This is what you get when you have a team in-house.

"Local government cannot go on absorbing the price of austerity.

"Carlisle has had 40 per cent cuts to its income and that means all services are at risk.

"We would properly fund local government to stop the cuts and make sure we properly fund services."

After meeting several council members - as well as posing for a few selfies with loyal Labour supporters - Mr Corbyn then moved on to the Durranhill Industrial estate.

He visited the former Border TV site, where he met Andrew Sayers of Sawyers Windows Construction, who has bought part of the site from Carlisle City Council and will be expanding his business there.
