Television viewers got a real flavour of Keswick as the national television spotlight shone on the town.

And a goulash dish served up at a pub was praised by a presenter - as recommended by dozens of viewers who wrote into his show.

BBC presenter Matt Allwright sampled goulash at the Dog & Gun after being encouraged to visit, declaring: "It's really good".

The show was aired on BBC1's The One Show on Friday, with Matt stopping off in the town as part of an A-Z tour of the country.

It was a trip that saw him visit the Puzzling place, the Square Orange cafe - where he sampled tapas - the pencil museum and enjoyed a row on Derwentwater.

The goulash has been served at the Lake Road pub for more than 50 years as the landlord at the time had a Hungarian wife who made it for fell walkers to enjoy after they had been out walking.

Head chef Jamie Donovan said: “Originally the dish was made in a cast iron kettle hung above an open fire out in the fields of Hungary.

"We might have moved away from this tradition but we make it fresh on site every day and we leave it to chill to ensure the flavours are infused into the meat.

"Over the years it’s got more and more popular, last year alone we sold 35,000 Goulash dishes making it the best-selling meal on the menu.”

The pub, owned by Greene King, was included as part of a travelogue feature on the show, where presenters tour the country searching for the best dishes.

Matt said: “That’s some goulash. A sea of meat and spice surrounding the largest dumpling on earth.”
