A court has heard how two men pocketed thousands of pounds while working at the Kendal Calling music festival.

Mmenie Udofia, 21, and 22-year-old Ibrahima Jalloh, brazenly stole cash while employed behind a busy bar at this year's Eden Valley event in July - putting money in their pockets and not a till.

The popular event, at Lowther Deer Park, attracts thousands of people every year, with Plan B, The Libertines and Catfish and the Bottlemen all headlining this year's sold out festival.

Prosecutor Brendan Burke told Carlisle Crown Court yesterday: "It came to attention because more than one customer noticed that was what was going on."

When taken to task, university student Udofia was found to have £1,580 hidden in his underpants, while £1,620 was recovered from Jalloh's car.

Both pleaded guilty to theft, and were sentenced by Recorder Julie Clemitson.

She noted both men were "remorseful" for their offending.

Udofia, of Chancery Street, and Jalloh, of Crawford Close, both in Leicester, had six-month jail terms suspended for 18 months. Each must also complete 150 hours' unpaid work.

"You were, in my view, subject to a significant degree of trust," said Recorder Clemitson. "You breached that trust by taking, in both cases, approximately £1,600 for your own use."
