Copeland MP Jamie Reed has added his voice to disaffected Labour MPs asking leader Jeremy Corbyn to step down.

Mr Reed posted the full letter on social networking website Twitter.

He says: "In the short time you have been leader...you have sought to inject an unprecedented poison into our party. You have actively worked to divide Labour MPs.

"A General Election now seems likely to be held sooner rather than later. The Labour Party will be fortunate to survive much more of your leadership and the best interests of the party will not be served at any election which you remain in post.

"For the benefit of our party, for the benefit of Labour voters, for the benefit of all those millions who need a Labour government...your resignation cannot come soon enough.

"You will never be the leader of this country...I urge you to muster the necessary dignity with which to follow the Prime Minister's example and resign your post."

Mr Reed resigned as shadow health minister when Mr Corbyn was elected as Labour Party leader.
