A popular feature of the summer season is set to return for the bank holiday weekend.

The International market - which brings colour and culture to the city - will be setting up shop from Thursday, August 23 to Monday, August 27.

This year, the market organised by Market Place Europe and supported by Carlisle City Council, will form part of Carlisle's Fringe programme.

Shoppers will be spoilt for choice with a huge mix of authentic continental treats in the city centre.

There will be a range of cuisine and street foods on offer from Spanish, French, German, Italian, Greek and Turkish.

Also, Thai noodles, spicy Indian curries, rare and exotic meats and burgers including ostrich, kangaroo, wild boar and crocodile.

There will also be a range of cheeses and a hog roast as well as cakes, biscuits, sweets and crepes.

A street bar, serving up continental beers and wines, will be setting up shop in the city centre.

Green fingered shoppers will not be disappointed either as the market will include a Dutch plant seller with an array of shrubs, plants, trees and bulbs.

And there will also be arts and crafts for sale.

The stalls will be open between 9am and 8pm on Thursday, 9am to 9pm on Fruday, 9am to 9pm on Saturday, 10am to 6pm on Sunday and 10am to 6pm on Monday.

An ancient Proclamation will be recited at the Market Cross on Saturday, August 25 at 10am.

The Proclamation is a declaration of the city council’s rights to hold an annual fair in August, originally granted to the citizens of Carlisle in 1352 by Edward III.

A procession including Carlisle Mayor Jessica Riddle, sword and mace bearers and other Civic dignitaries will make its way from St Cuthbert’s Church to the Market Cross.

The 10-day Carlisle Fringe programme starts on Monday and includes more than 100 events over eleven venues including the city centre and the Old Fire Station.
