A main road on the outskirts of Carlisle was closed off suddenly to allow workers to repair a burst water main.

The issue had left up to 600 properties without water or poor pressure in the CA1, CA2 and CA4 postcodes yesterday.

The problems were first reported to United Utilities about 7am yesterday.

Initially it was believed the leak was in Durdar Road, however, upon investigation engineers found it to be close to the Golden Fleece Service Station, off the M6 at junction 42.

United Utilities was forced into making an emergency road closure to allow works to be carried out.

Newbiggin Road, which connects Durdar to the motorway, was closed for some time having been shut off at 11.20am.

However, the problem has now been resolved, says United Utilities.

A statement on the United Utilities website said: "Our team of engineers has finished repairing the leaking pipe outside the Golden Fleece Service Station and the water should be starting to flow normally again.

"However it may take up to two hours for the water pressure to return to normal levels. We’re sorry if this has affected you and thank you for your patience.

"Because there’s been some disturbance to the pipes in your area you may notice the water is a little cloudy or discoloured, please check our Discoloured Water page for more information."

The road has reopened.
