Fans of BBC drama The A Word are gearing up for tonight's final episode.

But producers remain tight-lipped over the possibility of another series.

The second series of the drama set in the Lake District has proved popular.

The A Word, filmed in Cumbria and Manchester, follows the Hughes and Scott family and how members cope when youngest member Joe is diagnosed with autism.

In the second series, which has been shown over six weeks, the story picks up two years on. Joe, played by Max Vento, is now seven years old.

It stars Christopher Eccleston, Lee Ingleby, Morven Christie, Greg McHugh, Vinette Robinson and Molly Wright.

Thirlmere was one of the county locations used for filming earlier this year. Runners from local clubs became extras during filming of a fictional fell race.

Fans are hoping for a third series.

A BBC spokesman said: "No news as yet."

The A Word is on BBC One at 9pm tonight.
