The future of the customer contact set-up at Carlisle's Civic Centre will be discussed in detail at a meeting later this month.

Facilities have been located in a portable cabin in the car park after the building flooded in December 2015.

Members of the city council's community overview and scrutiny panel were told that the temporary building is "very quickly becoming unfit for purpose".

A report prepared for members of the panel said that the telephony part of the customer contact centre is currently located on the Civic Centre's fourth floor.

"Therefore, the two elements of the service are being challenged to operate as efficiently as they could be," the report added.

"That said, the teams are currently meeting those challenges and this shows their true professionalism and enthusiasm for carrying out excellent customer service for residents and visitors within Carlisle."

The customer contact centre offers a range of public services under one roof.

Staff are on hand to provide information, help and advice on a range of services.

Darren Crossley, Carlisle City Council's deputy chief executive, told the committee that a meeting would be held on June 13.

Then councillors would be able to have their say on what services would be provided on the ground floor.

"We want you to come to us and give us your ideas," he said.

"We want to know what should be included on the ground floor.

"For example: I know that there were party offices there prior to the floods, should they be kept?

"We're now in a position to move forward.

"We've agreed a settlement with the insurers and we're in a position to move forward."

The basement and ground floor of the iconic Rickergate building were filled with flood water when Storm Desmond swept across Cumbria.

This part of the city - not far from the swollen river Eden - was among the worst hit as the county endured one of its worst natural disasters.

The image of the Civic Centre emerging from the flood waters was one of the most striking sights of the floods.

As well as the Civic Centre, nearby homes and businesses were also swamped with water.

The Old Fire Station arts venue was among the notable Rickergate buildings hit in the floods.

A number of other city council buildings and sites were flooded, including the John Street hostel and the Sheepmount stadium.
