A pop band has been handing out prizes to pupils at a Cumbrian school.

The four members of boyband Union J were guests of honour at Ullswater Community College in Penrith for its fifth annual prize day.

More than 130 prizes were awarded in two ceremonies to pupils past and present. Awards were in recognition of individual qualities that the school values.

Union J, winners of the 2013 Radio 1 Teen Music Awards, wowed 2,000 pupils, parents and guests with an acappella performance. Celebrations included performances from pupils in music, drama, dance and cheerleading.

Each prize winner received a certificate citing the reasons for their award. They were also given £10 gift vouchers in the form of “Penrith Pounds” to support local traders.

Firms and others who sponsored the prize were also recognised for their support.

Headteacher Nigel Pattinson said: “Josh Cuthbert from Union J told me that they’d had a brilliant time, were blown away by the talent of the student dancers, musicians, cheerleaders and performers and that they’d enjoyed the day so much they would love to come back.

“The range of talent, academic potential, sporting prowess, musical ability and artistic flair across the college is stunning.

Nigel Pattinson "Added to that there are students who make outstanding progress during their time here and others who do remarkable things in the service of their community or who display a superb attitude towards others. We’ve decided to spend one day in the year making as big a fuss about these as possible.”

Josh, JJ Hamblett, Jaymi Hensley and Casey Johnson also visited the nearby North Lakes Hotel during their stay.

The singers took time out of their preparations ahead of their European tour in December ahead of gigs in the UK next February.

After the event, Casey posted on Twitter: “Had a great time @ullswatercc today, thanks for having us, really enjoyed it.”

Ullswater Community College is building a reputation for attracting celebrities to its annual prizegiving day.

A year ago Coronation Street actress and Strictly Come Dancing contestant Georgia May Foote travelled to Cumbria for the event.
