Heroes from Carlisle United's 1990s heyday are returning to the city this weekend for a special charity night in honour of Tony Hopper.

Title-winning manager Mick Wadsworth and former captain and goal hero David Reeves are among the top Blues names appearing at the event in Carlisle's Quarter Lounge.

Along with former United favourites Paul Murray, Darren Edmondson and Gary Bennett, they will take part in a question-and-answer session hosted by former BBC Radio Cumbria commentator Nick Barnes.

Their memories of Carlisle's glory years of the mid-1990s will be the highlight of Sunday night's sell-out event which is raising money in support of former midfielder Hopper, who has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease.

There will also be a major raffle including a host of prizes donated by Premier League clubs, including signed shirts from England stars Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

The event is being organised by Andrew Francis, who said everyone involved was determined to rally around Hopper and his family.

Mr Francis said: "I used to be involved down at Carlisle United when Mick Wadsworth was there.

"It was a great time for the club, with two promotions and two days at Wembley, and Mick is still a close friend.

"Tony Hopper was involved in that period along with a lot of local boys like Rory Delap, Tony Caig, Matt Jansen, Paul Murray, Edmo and all the others.

"Tony is such a nice guy and I felt so sorry for him when I heard about his plight.

"I knew I could pull something together with my contacts and friends and try to raise some money.

"It was just a case of calling in a few favours, and when people have heard what it is for, they have all been very keen to help."

About 150 people quickly snapped up tickets for the event at the Quarter Lounge, which is run by Andrew's nephew James Hill.

But tickets are still available for the raffle, which boasts several high-profile prizes.

The raffle offers tickets at different prices, reflecting the level of prizes on offer.

A £5 ticket offers the chance to win signed shirts by Spurs favourites Alli and Kane, tickets for the Carlsberg hospitality lounge at a Liverpool game, further signed shirts from Tottenham, Newcastle, Carlisle and Sheffield United, and a pair of goalkeeping gloves donated by Sunderland's Jordan Pickford.

Also up for grabs are £1,100 worth of gym time, vouchers for David's Restaurant and hair products from Jo Mark.

The £2 raffle, meanwhile, offers meals at the Quarter Lounge, a Pioneer meat hamper, Carlisle United tickets, passes for Walby Farm Park, meals at the Shabby Scholar, meals at the Old Bank City Pub and Chop House, a Next voucher, a nomination bracelet from Beadle & Hill jewellers, a voucher for Paolo's fish and chips, tickets for a target wrestling super show, tickets for the Solway Aviation Museum at Carlisle Airport, a voucher for Casanova Menswear and more.

Funds raised on the night will go to the Hopper family's "Creating Hoppy Memories" fund which will help Tony and wife Sue create some lasting memories for their three sons.

The News & Star is also backing the Hoppers with our Fighting Back For Tony campaign which highlights their efforts to support the MND Association.

Raffle tickets for Sunday night's event can still be bought at the Quarter Lounge in Treasury Court, Carlisle, and the Old Bank City Pub and Chop House on Fisher Street, Carlisle.
