Footballing stars have picked up a hat-trick of honours at tonight's glittering Carlisle Living Awards.

Former Carlisle United manager Paul Simpson received a special award for outstanding achievement.

It was in recognition of his role leading England to its first World Cup success since 1966.

Cumbrian-born Simmo steered England's Under-20s squad to glory back in June.

Elsewhere John Halpin picked up an award for his efforts at the grassroots of the game.

Former player John is Carlisle United's Football in the Community officer, a role he has held for the last 13 years.

He was presented with the Sports City award.

Football league referee Anthony Backhouse completed the hat-trick when he received the One to Watch accolade which singles out rising stars.

The 26-year-old has been promoted to the Level 1 Referee List which means he will be in charge of matches in the English Football League.

He is the first from Cumbria to do so in over 40 years.

The trio have been celebrating with 400 guests at the glamorous event at The Garden at Eden.

Carlisle Youth Zone was among the winners tasting success once again.

Twelve months ago it won the Best Team award and now the youth charity has been named Best Place to Work, with one employee calling it "truly inspirational".

Now a highlight in the city's social calendar, categories at the Carlisle Living Awards highlight the best restaurants, shops, salons, and cultural spots.

Special 'Citymaker' awards have also been presented to people who contribute to making Carlisle a more vibrant, confident city.

The 2017 Carlisle Living Awards were organised by CN Events in partnership with St. James's Place Wealth Management. Carlsberg UK were associate sponsor.

More than 100 finalists were shortlisted for the 26 awards. Carlisle businessman John Myers, who chaired the judging panel, hosted the popular evening.
