A new style of women's football that combines drinking Prosecco with the beautiful game will launch in Whitehaven next month.

A fun, informal football session will be held at Whitehaven Amateurs Football Club, followed by a Prosecco and buffet reception. Prosecco Soccer is an opportunity for new and returning players to enjoy the game in a fun, relaxed environment.

The Cumberland Football Association said the initiative was prompted by an increasing interest in the sport from women following the success and continued rising profile of Women’s Super League and the England women’s national team.

Ray Sempill, football development officer at the Cumberland FA, said: “We started Prosecco Soccer as a format of the game that all women could access, whether they’ve played before or not.

"The relaxed environment was deliberately put in place to attract anyone who fancies a kick about. Following the success of our initial sessions, we are now looking to host more events across the county.”

It is hoped that the sessions in Whitehaven will become a regular occurrence.

Booking for the Whitehaven Prosecco Soccer launch event is essential.

It will be held on Friday, September 1, at 7pm. Entry is £5, and includes use of facilities, a glass of Prosecco, a T-shirt and buffet.
