Stores hit by flooding have reopened today as the scale of yesterday's torrential downpours emerged.

Next Home and Hobbycraft at Kingstown Retail Park were forced to close after water started to pour down the walls and crept across the shop floors. Homebase was affected.

Heavy rain caused the car park to flood and water streamed into the stores.

Hobbycraft's general manager Dawn Irving said the water came in 18ft across the floor and was about an inch deep.

They closed at about 3pm yesterday but along with Next Home and Homebase were able to trade again as normal today.

"The assistant manager showed by the CCTV. It was so quick.

"He was sending me pictures yesterday. It looked pretty bad."

Next door, Darcy Irving, assistant manager of Next Home, said: "The water came in through the front of the store at the windows.

"It was because our gutters have been blocked.

"We weren't able to reopen because the water continued to come through until the rain stopped."

She said there was no major damage but stock in the window displays was soaked.

Elsewhere drivers have faced tricky conditions after the heavy downpours brought surface flooding to routes across the county.

It came as a 10-hour warning of rain was issued by the Met Office at lunchtime. The forecaster said up to 40mm of rain was expected in a matter of hours and could lead to localised flooding.

Torrential rain also hit parts of south west Scotland with reports of drains not being able to take the onslaught of water.

Police Scotland officers from Annan & Dumfries attended flooding in Pretoria Road and Delhi Place in Eastriggs. There went door to door checking for vulnerable residents in the street.
