FLOOD alerts have been issued along the Cumbrian coast as gale force winds could cause huge waves to top defences.

The Environment Agency has issued three warnings which span the length of the county's coast from Gretna, in southwest Scotland, to Millom.

The alerts, which are expected to be in force until midday on Tuesday, warn that flooding is possible.

The Environment Agency said: "Gale force winds are forecast and will bring the risk of very large waves during this period.

"Overtopping of defences and tidal spray may cause onshore flooding to roads and some properties along the coast may be affected.

"Please take care in high winds, stay away from exposed coastal areas and follow any instructions from the emergency services."

Environment Agency officers are on the ground ensuring defences are in good working order, monitoring sea levels and wind directions.

Locations likely to be most affected are the coast at Silloth and exposed areas across the Cumbrian coast.

A flood alret has also been issued for the upper River Derwent, Stonethwaite Beck and Derwentwater.
