This the first look at an historic centre piece at the heart of a new housing development in Carlisle.

Esh Homes, which is building the Suttle Gardens development off Wigton Road, is restoring the listed Suttle House.

Twenty-nine new homes will be built on the site, which is suitable for families.

The renovation of Suttle House will begin within weeks, following consultation with local partners to ensure the final property retains its history and original features, while bringing it up to modern standards.

The Grade II-listed Suttle House is believed to have been in existence in some form since 1746, but fire damage and lack of maintenance left the property on the cusp of being demolished.

The building will now be sensitively restored to return it back to its former glory, after Historic England wrote to Carlisle City Council expressing concern that the house could be knocked down.

A new application which would see the house refurbished and incorporated into the wider development was eventually approved.

Developers Homes by Esh has now unveiled the first computer-generated image of what the completed Suttle House will look like.

Colin Willetts, deputy managing director of Homes by Esh, said: "When we initially looked at developing the Suttle Gardens scheme, Suttle House was originally earmarked for demolition given the poor standard of the building following a series of fires.

"However, after working with Historic England, we decided that a full-scale renovation and conservation project to bring it back into everyday use would be a more positive course of action.

"Now, we are pleased to say that the centre piece of the development will be Suttle House as we work with our construction team to guarantee a future for the historic home through careful restoration.

"The intention is to sell the house to a private buyer once work has been completed and the full scale of the renovation work can be appreciated and enjoyed by residents and future generations for many more years to come."

The first show home will open on October 7.

Mr Willetts said: "Visitors will see Suttle Gardens features a range of modern features.

"The development offers detached family homes to meet the strong demand for quality housing in the local area and with Suttle House at its centre, is a welcome addition to the local area.

"We’re particularly pleased to be able to see the renovation of a piece of Carlisle history through to completion and look forward to welcoming visitors to the development in the future."
