Youths have been sparking trouble by setting off fireworks in the centre of Wigton.

Police say they have become "very concerned" for the safety of residents and those involved after receiving "numerous reports" of fireworks being set off in the town centre.

Locals say that 12-17 year olds have been letting off fireworks in High Street, King Street and the Water Street car park.

The latest incident happened on Thursday evening about 7.30pm when a firework was thrown at the back door or a commercial property in Wheatsheaf Lane.

Officers believe it is a minority of young people causing the problem, stating their behaviour is having a "detrimental impact of quality of life for the local community".

Police in Wigton are urging people to be responsible with fireworks following the incidents.

Sergeant Gill Atkinson said: "The local community team will be working with local businesses that sell fireworks to avoid them falling into the hands of underage people.

"We are also in continuous engagement with local youngsters and will be advising them of the dangers they are putting themselves, and others, in by the antisocial misuse of fireworks."

She added: "I’d also appeal to parents and guardians to ensure that they know what their children are doing, especially if they know they are using fireworks. Please help us to keep them safe.

"In the wrong hands fireworks can cause serious injury or damage."
