Learning to battle blazes topped the curriculum when west Cumbrian pupils went on a field trip to watch firefighters at work.
The children, from Ennerdale and Kinniside Primary School, were encouraged to take part in a variety of tasks at Whitehaven Fire Station.
They were also given a tour of the station as part of a topic looking into the different jobs carried out in the community.
Headteacher David Moore said: "The children had a great time setting off alarms and handling the hose reels."
The Ennerdale pupils are also currently working on a school project looking at the Great Fire of London of 1666.
They have been studying the devastation of the famous fire, which is believed to have destroyed the homes of 70,000 of London's 80,000 inhabitants. Pupils have also building models of London.
Mr Moore added: "The children have been looking at how a modern brigade would have handled the Great Fire.
"They have really enjoyed it.''
