Firefighters have praised the safety procedures of a Cumbrian factory which prevented the spread of a fire.

Crews from Wigton and Carlisle were called to the Innovia Films where a fire had started in the polymear plant, where the plastics are made.

Paul Dean, watch manager at Carlisle West Fire Station, who attended the incident, said: "Part of the extrusion of polymer overheated and set on fire," he said.

"The on site fire crews did a cracking job and all the procedures worked fantastically."

While the equipment is designed to shut off in the event of a fire, he said the on site crew had everything under control.

It was extinguished using carbon dioxide.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service assisted by isolating the supply and standing by in case it development.

"Everything worked well. The safety procedures worked out brilliantly," Mr Dean added.
