Steps continue to be taken to tackle vandalism in Cleator Moor.

Frightened customers stopped visiting the library earlier this year after threatening youths terrorised staff and damaged property.

At the town's Civic Hall vandals also pulled a CCTV camera from the wall and drains and grills on the roof were smashed.

The unacceptable behaviour forced the county council to slash the opening hours at the time and a multi-agency group, involving police, the county and borough council and youth groups, was set up in an attempt to stop the nuisance behaviour.

Copeland Council has now applied for listed building consent to attach a security light to its offices, above the front door.

A council spokeswoman said: "In response to a multi-agency meeting held earlier this year, Copeland Council has applied to install lighting on a council owned building in Market Square.

"It is proposed that the light will be located above the front entrance of the building and will aim to deter anti-social behaviour particularly during dark winter months.

"Other organisations located in the area are also taking measures to combat any nuisance behaviour."

She added that planning permission was required to install the light, as the building is listed."
