Extra police will be deployed for Carlisle United's big cup clash against north east giants Sunderland.

Senior officers say additional officers will be sent out for the operation covering the Carabao Cup game at United's Brunton Park ground.

They have stressed public safety is the top priority - but both club and officers expect most supporters to behave.

Sunderland - recently relegated from the Premier League - have been allocated 1,500 tickets for their first visit to Carlisle in a competitive fixture since 1995.

Blues fans travelled to Sunderland's Stadium of Light ground for an FA Cup tie in 2014.

Superintendent Mark Pannone is in charge of policing Tuesday night’s game.

He said: "This is a big game for Carlisle and Cumbria Police are working with Carlisle United to ensure that every fan has a safe and enjoyable night.

"Extra patrols will be on hand to assist all fans and to prevent crime and disorder.

"As always, we anticipate that the vast majority of both Carlisle and Sunderland fans will act in a positive way.

"Public safety is our number one priority and we will be on hand to provide whatever support is required.”

United's media officer Andy Hall said: "We have got an excellent relationship with Sunderland.

"Nearly 6,000 United fans went over to their place in 2014 and since then, on and off the field, our relationship has gone from strength to strength.

"They have given us everything from seats to floodlights and their fans have always been brilliant.

"We don't think is a game where we have to urge our supporters to do anything, they will do what they normally do."

The second-round tie, which is expected to attract a big crowd, has a 7.45pm kick-off.
