Legendary British boxer Frank Bruno is set to entertain diners at a knock out evening in Carlisle.

The former heavyweight champion of the world is set to host a special dinner in the city.

Boxing fans will be able to hear stories of Frank’s struggle to the top before defeating American Oliver McCall in his fourth world title attempt at the old Wembley Stadium in 1995.

They can also hear about other aspects of his long career – which made him one of the most loved boxers and British sporting personalities of the last few decades.

Away from the ring, Bruno was a regular on mainstream TV in the 1980s and 1990s.

He became a household name and even had his own ‘Know what I mean ‘Arry’ catchphrase from his famous double act with BBC commentator Harry Carpenter.

The evening in Carlisle takes place at The Shepherds Inn at Rosehill on Saturday, January 21 at 7pm.

Comedian Terry Joyce will provide some of the entertainment.

IM Events, who brought England football legend Paul Gascoigne to the city earlier this year, has organised Bruno’s visit.

Ian Milburn, from the Cumbria-based firm, said: “It’s great that we’ve managed to get Frank Bruno to come to Carlisle.

“We’ve got 300 tickets for the night and 200 of them have been reserved already.”

Bruno’s appearance comes on the back of other boxing evenings in Carlisle, organised by Mr Milburn. These include appearances by fighters Sugar Ray Leonard and Nigel Benn.

Mr Milburn said: “I’ve got a link up with comedian Lester Crabtree and he’s been working in this industry for about 25 years.

“He has all the contacts and that’s how I am able to book stars like Frank Bruno.”

It’s not the first time Bruno has appeared in Carlisle. The fighter made a guest appearance at the former Buskers nightclub in Lonsdale Street in 2003.

Tickets for the Rosehill event cost £50, which includes a two-course meal.
