Emergency services were deployed after flash flooding hit an estate in Carlisle.

Firefighters were sent to Welsh Road, Harraby, in the early hours of today after torrential overnight downpours led to fears over rising water.

A fire service spokesman said water got into one house, soaking carpets, after flooding hit the street.

Problems with rain continued today, with police reporting the A7 at Westlinton was partially blocked, with very slow traffic, due to flooding near a crossroads.

In Harraby, there were concerns from residents over floodwater bubbling up out of surface drains.

A crew was dispatched at 3.30am following the extreme downpour.

But the spokesman said water started to recede fairly quickly.

The problems arose, he said, following a "very heavy shower".

Downpours continued today, with motorists reporting torrential downpours on the way into work in Carlisle this morning.

Rain and showers were forecast for the city today, stretching into this evening.

The crew was dispatched from Carlisle's eastern fire station, off Eastern Way.

The prospect of flooding continues to cast a large shadow over Carlisle after two disasters in just over 10 years brought misery to homes and businesses.
