A Carlisle schoolgirl has celebrated becoming a teenager by getting a close shave, raising hundreds for charity.

Over £800 has already been raised by Eleanor Elliot, a year eight pupil at Caldew School in Dalston, for the Little Princess Trust.

The figure smashes her original £350 target.

The charity makes wigs for children who have lost their hair during cancer treatment or other illnesses.

Eleanor's 21-inch long brown locks were cut off by her aunt Julie, who is a trained hairdresser who lives in Morton.

Eleanor, who lives with her family at Speckled Wood Drive, Carleton on the edge of the city, said: "I really excited knowing that my hair has gone to such a good cause and will be helping another young person who really needs it, and it feels strange having short hair.

"It was nice that it was my aunty Julie who cut it for me."

The money raised helps the charity to carry out its work.

The close shave took place on Wednesday afternoon - after 13-year-old Eleanor had finished school for the day.

Staff and students at Caldew School have been supporting Eleanor, donating money.
