An elderly man suffered from smoke inhalation after a toaster and kitchen units caught fire.
Fire crews from both of Carlisle's stations were sent to the property in Dunmallet Rigg, Morton, last night, shortly before 11pm.
They found the man in the property and gave him oxygen therapy before handing him over the paramedics.
A spokesman for the crews said: "Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.
"Crews then used a large high-pressure fan to clear smoke from the property."
There was no substantial damage to the property except for the effects of the smoke.
Fire crews were in attendance for around an hour and 15 minutes.
