Dedication was what they needed - and their hard work paid off, as a Carlisle hospice is now an official record holder.

Eden Valley Hospice is now listed in the Guinness World Records, after successfully creating the longest line of pom poms.

The Durdar Road based charity smashed the previous record of 7,000 pom poms, by more than four times that - 29,312 to be exact.

Supporters, staff and volunteers had been busily making pom poms for months, and last September it took five hours to lay them side by side through The Lanes Shopping Centre in Carlisle.

Official adjudicators were on site, but it was not until this month that they were officially told it was a world record.

An email confirming the feat said: "We are delighted to inform you that your application for the largest line of pom poms has been successful and you are now world record title holder."

Pom poms were donated from a range of places, including local schools and brownie groups.

Ally Duncan, manager at Eden Valley Hospice, said: "We had community support, not just local.

"We wanted to do something to mark the occasion, and we thought, everyone can make a pom pom.

"We wanted to get everyone involved."

The hospice helps provide specialist care to adults with life limiting conditions and their families, across North Cumbria and South West Scotland.

Opening in 1991, the hospice has provided care for patients and their families for over 15 years.

"We are here to provide vital support to families when they need it most." said Ally.

"It's vital care and people need it, and we need the money to support our local community."

A spokesperson for Guinness World Records said: "This is genuinely a great achievement by the Eden Valley Hospice.

"To break the previous record by four times the amount is truly amazing and we were certainly very impressed."
