Two former Workington schoolgirls are preparing to host fundraising nights as they compete to be crowned this year's Miss Cumbria.

Jasmine Ritchie, 18, of Derwent Bank, Seaton, and Chloe Neesham, 18, of Barfs Road, Distington, will go for glory in the event's final in Carlisle on November 12.

They are among 20 contestants who will take part in four rounds donning evening wear, sportswear, party wear and eco wear where competitors wear clothes made of recycled materials.

The winner will qualify for next year's Miss England competition.

But before then they must raise at least £200 for charity.

Jasmine, who works for Thomas Cook, said: "I was reading up on it and I realised that a lot of it was charity based and I applied for it.

"When I found out I'd made the final I did not know to react. I'm really excited."

Chloe, who works for Premier Inn at Howgate, said: "It's one the biggest things I've done and that's why I was nervous at first.

"I can't even believe that I've got through to the final. I've made so many new friends and they're all lovely."

Jasmine is a former pupil at Stainburn School and Chloe used to attend Southfield Technology College.

All the finalists have to raise at least £200 for charity and both Jasmine and Chloe are supporting Variety, the competition's charity.

Jasmine will also raise money for the Henderson Suite at the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.

The finalists have had some catwalk training and a mini photoshoot.

Jasmine has organised a charity night in aid of the West Cumberland Hospital's Henderson Suite at Workington's Royal British Legion club on Saturday.

It will start at 7.30pm and will feature live music, a raffle and cakes. People can pay to enter on the door and can donate whatever they can.

Chloe has arranged a quiz night and raffle event at The Blue Bell Inn in Workington on November 9.

It will start at 7pm and is in aid of Variety. It will cost £2.50 to take part.
