A drunken man shouted expletives and abuse at a train worker who denied him travel from Whitehaven.

Stephen Louis Gannon, 55, of Cranbourne Road, Carlisle, appeared at magistrates court in Workington on Friday to answer a charge of using threatening words towards Edward Walker.

He pleaded guilty.

Pamela Fee, prosecuting, said Gannon had had 15 pints of beer while drinking with friends in Whitehaven on December 2.

When the group tried to board the train back to Carlisle from Whitehaven train station but were told it would not be leaving for another 20 minutes so there was no rush, Gannon launched a volley of expletives at Mr Walker.

He then began kicking the train and banging on the windows.

Gannon, defending himself, said he was disappointed by his behaviour.

He added: "I hate any form of intimidation or bullying and I do regret my actions on that night, I apologise."

Gerald Chalk, district judge, ordered Gannon to pay a fine of £300, costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £30.
