A motorist seen driving the wrong way down a Carlisle city centre street was twice the drink drive limit, a court heard.

At the city's Rickergate Magistrates Court, 24-year-old Edvinas Butkus admitted drink driving, uninsured driving, and driving with no valid licence.

Prosecutor Pam Ward said police noticed the defendant as he drove a VW car the wrong way along Warwick Road in the early hours of October 20.

When he was pulled over, the officer saw Butkus sitting in his car, his head slumped over the steering wheel.

He then got out of the car, unsteady on his feet, and threw the car keys down on to the ground.

A test showed the defendant, of Alton Street, Carlisle, had twice the legal limit of alcohol in his system.

The court heard that in 2015 Butkus had been given a 20 month ban for drink driving.

He was fined £200, with £85 costs, and a £30 victim surcharge. He was also banned from driving for 42 months.

In an unrelated case, self-employed roofer Anthony Forsyth, 44, of Harker, Carlisle, was given a two year driving ban after he drove a van just 25 yards while over the drink drive limit on October 30.

It happened in Lancaster Street, Carlisle.

A test showed that at the time the defendant had around three times the legal alcohol limit in his body.

His defence lawyer, Anthony Wilson, said that at the time another man had crashed the van and Forsyth had simply moved the van so it could be fitted with new tyres.

“He won’t be able to continue with his line of work if he has no licence,” said Mr Wilson.

District Judge Gerald Chalk also imposed 70 hours of unpaid work, with costs of £85 and a victim surcharge for the same amount.

He offered the defendant a drink driver rehabilitation course, which will reduce the length of the ban but will cost £185.
