A new hero has emerged from Storm Ophelia after a West Cumbrian publican rescued a dog from stormy seas.

Chris Wilson, of the Captain Nelson pub in Maryport, said a passer-by rushed into his pub crying that there was a dog in distress in the harbour.

"I ran to the Navy Club next door where Maryport Inshore Rescue people can be found.

"By the time they responded, however, I had managed to get right down to the water's edge and pull the dog out of the harbour by grabbing onto his harness."

He said he then took the four-year-old Staffy-Boxer cross back to his nearby pub.

"We gave him food and water and put him near the fire to warm up."

Chris posted pictures of the dog on Facebook and proved, again, the far reaching effects of social media.

Jason Birbeck of Fleming Street, Maryport, said his family's much-loved pet, Ben, had been out with his walker.

"I was told he was missing and immediately went to put a picture and appeal on Facebook. Before I could even do that my brother's girlfriend had posted me a message saying Ben had been found at the Captain Nelson."

He said he was truly grateful to Chris Wilson.

"He was only missing for about an hour but it was a worry. We are very grateful to Chris."

Ben was taken to the vet yesterday for a check-up and to ensure there were no lasting effects from his dip in a very cold, very rough sea this morning.
