Down at the bottom of her garden in a blue shed, one jewellery maker is busy handcrafting silver rings, necklaces and earrings.

It may not be your most conventional office but Kate Davidson says her shed is the perfect work space.

The 30-year-old mum earmarked the shed for her own when she and her husband looked round the house on Lawson Street, off Newtown Road, Carlisle.

She said of the shed: "It's lovely. It's nice and really quiet.

"It's just totally my place and I can escape."

Kate has decorated the little blue shed with fairy lights and bunting and said it is warm even in winter.

Although Kate has made jewellery for friends and family for years, she has recently started selling her creations online and at craft fairs.

Kate, who works as a senior manager at Capita, started doing evening classes at art college back when it was Cumbria Institute of the Arts.

She really enjoyed the course and started to built up her jewellery making tools. Over the years, and thanks to many Christmas presents, she has built up her collection of tools and has a custom made desk for making jewellery.

Kate mainly designs and makes silver jewellery but also does bits with gold. She recently made wedding rings for her friend and her husband-to-be.

As the friend lives in Germany, the 18 carat gold wedding ring made a few trips across Europe while Kate sorted out the size.

Kate enjoys making all sorts of jewellery and said the heart-designed pieces she makes are most popular.

She tries to work in her shed a couple of times a week, though it can be hard with her baby Zoe.

She said: "It's just a hobby really. I just made so many pieces and I wanted to make more."

Encouraged by her friends and family who told her she had to get her jewellery out there on the market, Kate has started selling her pieces online at Etsy and Folksy and at local craft fairs.

She set up a stall at the Sands Centre Winter Market on Sunday, November 20, where she had chats with lots of interesting people.

This Sunday Kate will be taking her simple silver designs to Askham Hall Christmas Market.

Prices vary from £26 for earrings to £65 for a more complicated silver geometric necklace - where a triangle, circle and square are all intricately connected.

Kate is also trying to promote her business through Facebook and Instagram. She posts pictures of the whole process from drawings of her designs to cutting and soldering silver on her work bench and the finished product.
