A dangerous driver's 35-mile Cumbrian motorway escapade ended with a spectacular crash which was captured on video by another motorist.

Police received a host of concerned calls from members of the public who saw David Whitehead's camper van weaving all over the southbound M6 on April 8.

Travelling at around 80mph, 49-year-old Whitehead's vehicle was seen being driven erratically and going out of control between Southwaite, near Carlisle and the South Lakes.

Carlisle Crown Court heard a fellow motorist with a dashboard-mounted camera followed the motorhome out of a service area near Kendal. Moments later the witness watched in shock as it slammed into the central reservation, overturned and came to rest on the hard shoulder.

Debris was strewn across the carriageway but no other damage was caused.

Whitehead later admitted charges of dangerous driving and failing to provide a specimen of blood to police.

He was sentenced at the crown court and jailed for 12 months.

Whitehead, of Parkinson Street, Burnley, was also given a three-year driving ban.

Recorder Philip Grundy told him: "The reality is that you posed a considerable risk indeed - a risk of serious injury or death."
