A dangerous driver who sped away from police on Christmas Day and then crashed was chewing cannabis leaves when police officers caught up with him.

Carlisle's Rickergate magistrates' court heard that Lee McCutcheon, 25, of no fixed abode, drove dangerously on Newtown Road and Moorhouse Road in Carlisle.

He admitted that offence, driving with no insurance, and failing to cooperate with police by not taking a roadside drugs swipe after he was caught.

District Judge Gerald Chalk told him that he felt such a prolonged case of dangerous driving was so serious that McCutcheon should be sentenced by a circuit judge at Carlisle Crown Court.

That hearing will be held on August 4. In the meantme, the defendant was remanded in custody.
